Carmen Heatwole earns Dr. Carl G. Pierce Jr. scholarship

Beebe student's outstanding academics earn award
June 3, 2011

Carmen Heatwole, a senior at Beebe School of Nursing, has earned the Dr. Carl G. Pierce Jr., endowed scholarship for her outstanding academic performance. Heatwole, of Greenwood, plans to work with children. She would like to work either in pediatric oncology in a school setting with special needs children, or with children in underserved areas such as Africa.

The scholarship is awarded to a student based on his or her academic performance in maternal, child, and family health nursing, as well as on a caring and professional attitude and an interest in pediatrics. Mrs. Carl G. Pierce Jr., together with her family, endowed the scholarship in memory of her husband, who was a physician at Beebe Medical Center from 1951 until he retired in 1987. Dr. Pierce also had a long association with Beebe School of Nursing, where he served as school physician and taught nursing students about children.
