Kevin Fleming opens new Rehoboth gallery

One of the Cape Region’s best known artists has opened a new gallery in Rehoboth Beach.

Photographer Kevin Fleming opened Kevin Fleming and Friends Gallery at 239 Rehoboth Ave. in early May. “I had one in Bethany last year that did really well. I thought I should be in Rehoboth too. Seemed like a natural thing,” Fleming said.

The gallery features Fleming’s photographs, books and calendars, as well as art and photography from Deb Applebee, Tony Pratt and Pam Bieler. Fleming’s son, Jay, also has works on display, and Fleming said he hopes to have visiting artists showcase their work over the weekends.

Fleming will also be doing photography seminars at his studio, where he helps novices learn about the art of taking photographs.

Besides photos, the gallery also has copies of Fleming’s books showing off Delaware’s diverse nature. All told, Fleming has published 19 books; his photos have appeared in, among other places, Newsweek and National Geographic.

“I’ve done three books since last August, and I’m starting on two new ones,” he said.

One of the books available is a visitors guide Fleming put together at the request of Gov. Jack Markell.

“There are only 1,000 copies available. They are all signed and numbered. It’s kind of a best-of book. The governor wanted a book, and I had about two weeks to do it. It’s photographs that have been published before, plus some new stuff. Best of ‘Wild Delmarva,’ ‘Wild Delaware,’” Fleming said.

When asked how he shoots his nature scenes, Fleming said, “You can’t set anything up. It’s all nature. You go out at sunrise, and you might get lucky and you might not. You might get nothing for two or three days.”
