Kelly Serpico was a Division One soccer player for the University of Delaware and now lives in Lewes with her family. I often see her running in Seashore Striders road races. At the Blue-Gold 5K held June 11, my friend Jerry McNesby told me that Kelly was teaching Zumba and I responded, “Who is Zumba?” figuring he was a kid in the hand-in-hand Buddy program for the Saturday night all-star game. Zumba is described as a dance fitness party and the music is Latin. Kelly’s classes will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m., Thursday and Saturday mornings starting June 16 at American Legion Post 17 on Lewes Beach. Just turn right after that small chamber of commerce building with the stand in front displaying radical rafts for tourists. The Legion now has a gigantic outdoor pavilion, so rain or shine, you can get your Zumba freak on. The cost is $10 and no preregistration is required. Kelly is a great person. It sounds like fun, lots of freestyle and no counting steps.
Jaegermeisters - A visiting family caucused and coalesced for a spontaneous family photo after Saturday’s Blue-Gold 5K in downtown Lewes, so I stole their picture because this many members of my family showing up at 9 a.m. could never happen without someone yelling, “He’s back with the doughnuts!” I asked the Jaeger clan if they were related to the local Yeagers, and they said “As if,” adding, “We are at the race to run off the Grotto pizza we had the night before and to spend time together.”
Name Association – I once called some paranoid guy with a boat for sale and told him my name was Dave Frederick and he asked, “Are you related to Fred Hertrich?” I laughed and said, “I get it, car guy joke. Not related but I do drive a Toyota.” He had no idea what I was talking about and hung up.
Little Big House – Yes, LeBron James did celebrate his 17th birthday at the Slam Dunk tournament in Lewes and yes, he did skip the press interview in the band room after a game because my big loser self was waiting for him. But the Grotto pizza was free, so personally I didn’t care if he ever showed up. I always liked James, but now he is the king of character flaws, the ultimate big hat, no cattle, can’t-deliver-under-pressure prized athlete. Tyson Chandler, the Dallas center, also played in Lewes as a 7-foot freshman for Dominquez High School. Dominquez is in Compton, Calif., home of the Williams sisters, a place comedian Robin Harris described as a place where "the cost of living is going up while the chance of living is going down.” Chandler is smart and well spoken, didn’t go to college but in an interview said, “It is time to seize the moment.” Now everyone loves Chandler, but they don’t like James because, like a Grotto's truck with a flat tire, he can’t deliver.
Texas - Stephen “Texas” Stuart was a team captain on the Cape football team last season; he broke his femur in the game against Sussex Tech. Now at 6-foot-2, 235 pounds, Texas is benching 365 lbs. (decline) and can do 225 18 times and dead lift 630 lbs. He will attend Bridgton Academy in Maine this fall. Bridgton is a 208-year-old institution that accepts 185 students per year and is the only postgraduate-only prep school in the United States. Stephen will play against Columbia, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth, UMass and Navy and others this coming season. He will not lose a year of college eligibility. Texas played another game during football season and a half before an MRI finally revealed the injury. I once played with a hip pointer, prompting a line coach to ask, “Are you walking funny for a reason?” to which I responded “And what reason would that be?” He answered, ”Knowing you, I wouldn’t dare to guess.”

Go on now, git!
