For every coupon book sold, Tanger gives $1 to TangerKids
June 3, 2017

Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth Beach announced four Sussex County schools will share $5,000 in TangerKids Grants. The program awards grant money to local schools in the communities where Tanger Outlet Centers are located. Grants awarded this month will benefit schools for the 2017-18 school year.

Lord Baltimore Elementary in Ocean View will receive a TangerKids Grant to start a robotics program for the entire school, which is kindergarten through fifth grade. In this program, students will learn how to code and to program robots, which will enhance students' problem-solving skills, progressive struggle and teamwork. Lord Baltimore will also receive a TangerKids Grant to fund two iPads and educational supplements to be used by special education students from kindergarten through second grade. The funds will buy materials that allow children to explore science, math, fine motor skills, and language arts utilizing the iPad camera and hands-on manipulatives, reinforcing math, problem solving, phonics and spelling in an interactive game-like format.

Morris Early Childhood Center in Milford will receive a TangerKids Grant to purchase materials that will allow teachers to demonstrate counting and number sense ideas to kindergarten and prekindergarten students in small-group settings. The materials will help teachers give students a visualization of addition and subtraction number stories. The students will use the items to practice 1-to-1 counting, solving number stories, comparing quantities and understanding numbers.

North Georgetown Elementary will receive a TangerKids Grant to buy books to teach reading and writing to beginning and developing language level English language learning students in third grade. The extra books will allow students to take books home to read, and they will be used by students year after year.

Southern Delaware School of the Arts will receive a TangerKids Grant to purchase Legos for the classroom to help students build their spatial and proportional awareness. Legos and the accompanying curriculum provide opportunities for third-graders to experience tangible objects, explore the mathematical possibilities of their bricks and strengthen their mathematical confidence, while also developing their use of problem-solving competencies, divergent thinking skills and creativity.

"In the age of budget cuts, this wonderful TangerKids Grant has enabled us to purchase more math materials that will better engage our kindergarten and preschool students in lessons on counting, number recognition and number sense," said Diane O'Hara, paraprofessional/librarian at Morris Early Childhood Center. "Our system of having math kits in the library allows our teachers and paraprofessionals to borrow materials, giving a wider selection for diversifying lessons that challenge the needs of our students. Morris Early Childhood Center sincerely thanks Tanger Outlets for selecting our school as one of their recipients."

"A substantial part of our mission at Tanger Outlets is to contribute positively to the communities in which we operate," said Steven B. Tanger, president and chief executive officer of Tanger Outlets. "A high-quality education is instrumental in enhancing our communities, and we are proud to once again give back to these remarkable schools as part of our efforts to support students and educators across the country."

For every coupon book sold, Tanger gives $1 to the TangerKids Grants program, which is designed to assist schools in Tanger Outlets' primary markets by providing grants for special projects, needed programs or equipment. Grants can also support groups within schools of all grade levels from kindergarten to 12th grade. These grants are offered to multiple schools at each of Tanger's 40 centers in the United States.
