Volunteers recognized for service to Ellendale community

A handful of volunteers who make sure nearly 600 local residents in need of food are able to eat were honored for their efforts July 20.

The Delmarva Clergy United in Social Action Foundation, based out of the Philadelphia Pentecostal holiness Church near Ellendale, works with the Food Bank of Delaware to provide boxes of food to needy families. Those receiving the boxes can pull up to the church on South Old State Road, where volunteers load their cars with enough food to last two weeks or more.

“The people in the community who don't know where their next meal will come from rely on the food program,” said Dandrea Kittles, vice president of the organization’s board of directors.

About 25 volunteers participate in the nonprofit's food program, which was started by church leader Bishop Major Foster in the mid-1980s.

The Delmarva Clergy also provides job training, emergency shelter and other community programs.
