Her business card defines Urban as an adjective relating to a city or town.

Studio is defined as a workshop where artists and performers hone their craft.

At her Urban Studio, nestled between the Milton Theatre and the Broadkill River, owner and stylist Jessica Blakeman said she has gathered a staff of hair and nail artists at her workshop to provide downtown Milton with a touch of glamour.

Since opening Urban Studio at the start of May, Blakeman said she has been pleased with the community’s reception. And after working at the beach since she came to Delaware in 2000, the stylist said she is happy to move slightly more inland to create a peaceful workshop.

“Where I’m at now is a more relaxed atmosphere with more personal service than any other salon I’ve worked in,” Blakeman said, looking out on the Broadkill River from her beauty boutique. “It’s definitely more relaxing, and our customers say how comfortable it is.”

With services ranging from pedicures to waxing and highlights to haircuts, Blakeman has been able to maintain her clientele, she said, as she worked on longtime client Terianne Utley’s hair.

Driving more than 45 minutes from her home in Dover to visit Urban Studio, Utley said her loyalty to Blakeman is so long-standing, she wouldn’t let anyone else touch her hair.

“She’s the best in the biz,” she said. “She always makes me feel beautiful.”

Currently, Blakeman said, she employs two nail technicians and one other stylist, Sean Metzgar, who specializes in nonsurgical hair replacement work and wedding updos.

Metzgar said after working with Blakeman for four years prior to the opening of Urban Studio, he is enjoying the location and having fun with some of the new hair trends.

“The feather extensions are the newest trend, with an actual feather in your hair,” he said. “Celebrities have made them very popular.”

No matter the service, Blakeman said her clients are generally happy to visit her in the new location and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

“My other clients from the beach love it,” she said. “They love to get out of the traffic and enjoy free parking.”
