Installing sewer in Lewes in 1928

With water and wastewater infrastructure replacement work underway in Lewes, it’s a reminder of how disruptive such projects can be.

The first installation of municipal-wide sewer lines was no less disruptive in October of 1928 when Roydon L. Hammond made this photograph along Savannah Road in Lewes for a statewide photographic survey conducted by the state’s Department of Agriculture at that time. 

At least traffic was lighter and the road surface was easier to penetrate back then.
