Early 1900s winter ice threatening boardwalk and pavilion in Lewes

January 8, 2018

Lewes Historical Society Executive Director Mike DiPaolo sent along this photograph showing another time in the past when Delaware Bay froze. When this photograph was made in the early 1900s, Lewes still had a boardwalk along its beachfront.  DiPaolo said the structure, long since destroyed by hostile weather, extended from the Queen Anne Pier, at the east end of the beach, to Market Street, one block west of Savannah Road.
