Metropolitan Opera to broadcast ‘Tosca’ Feb. 3, 5, 6

February 1, 2018

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the Metropolitan Opera's broadcast of Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca" at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 and Monday, Feb. 5, and at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6. Screenings are now being held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation one week after being filmed live. Audience members are allowed to eat and drink concessions sold onsite in the theater. They will also appreciate the wonderful sound quality, as well as the comfortable seats.

"Tosca" offers a splendid backdrop for extraordinary soprano Sonya Yoncheva in the title role of the jealous prima donna. Vittorio Grigolo is the revolutionary artist lover, Cavaradossi, and Željko Lučić plays the depraved police chief, Scarpia. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.

Puccini's melodrama about a volatile diva, a sadistic police chief, and an idealistic artist has provoked and thrilled audiences for more than a century. The score is direct and intense, and it provides crowd-pleasing dramatic opportunities for the lead roles. These aspects have made "Tosca" one of a handful of iconic works that seem to represent opera in the public imagination. The opera's popularity is further secured by a superb and exhilarating dramatic sweep, a driving score of abundant melody and theatrical shrewdness, and a career-defining title role.

No opera is more tied to its setting than "Tosca," which takes place in Rome from the morning of June 17, 1800, through dawn of the following day. The specified settings for each of the three acts – the Church of Sant' Andrea della Valle, Palazzo Farnese and Castel Sant' Angelo – are familiar monuments in the city and can still be visited today. Historical issues form the basis for the opera: the people of Rome are awaiting news of the Battle of Marengo in northern Italy which will decide the fate of their symbolically powerful city.
