Fisher-Martin House long before it was preserved

This photograph shows what preservation is all about. Cortland Hubbard made the image in October of 1959. It shows the Fisher-Martin House where it stood on a 500-acre property near Cool Spring known as White Meadow Farm. In an effort spearheaded by Jack Vessels, the 1730s house that had been deteriorating for many years was moved into Lewes in 1980 behind the Zwaanendael Museum, fully restored, and is now home to Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. Thomas Fisher built the Dutch Colonial-style house in the early 1730s and lived there for many years. He was the father of Joshua Fisher who became a successful Philadelphia merchant and advisor to the pilots who guided ships on Delaware Bay and River.
