Railroad crossings in Lewes in the 1930s

May 28, 2018

Since the decommissioning of the railroad line between Cool Spring and Lewes, the state has been removing railroad crossings. Most recently a crew has been at work taking out the rails, ties and associated equipment at the Kings Highway crossing in Lewes. This photograph from the mid-1930s shows that crossing looking southward, the rough road heading out of town. The large tree at the left appears to be the spreading ginkgo tree on the Virden property which still stands today and is one of the largest in the state. Everett Bryan, who made this photograph, was a pharmacist in Lewes, who also enjoyed photography.
