Cape band makes 'Journey' to finish camp

August 25, 2011

Nearly 100 musicians, flag twirlers and dancers finished the annual summer band camp at Cape Henlopen High School's Legends Stadium Aug. 24.

Students worked throughout the week on basic marching fundamentals, commands and moves on the field. A new, high-energy halftime show that pays tribute to the group Journey on the 30th anniversary of their hit "Don't Stop Believin'" was taught at the camp.

The show also includes Journey's "Any Way You Want It," as well as "Distorted" and "Urban" from Cirque du Soleil.

"We were thrilled about this camp," says flag corps director Peg Kirby, who has worked with the Vikings band for the past 15 years. "The students have worked very hard, and it's an exciting show."

New to the band this season is a nine-girl dance team that will perform during the halftime shows as well as other activities at Cape. Cape junior Rebecca Lusk will be directing and choreographing the team.

Director Rob Barbarita returns at the helm of the band for his fourth year with assistance from Ken Schleifer and Clay Riepan. Seniors Chloe Dye and Sierra West will be directing the marching Vikings as this year's drum majors.
