Jerome ‘Jerry’ Fegan, Project Liberty volunteer
Jerome “Jerry” Fegan, 73, of Rehoboth Beach passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
Jerry was born in Washington, D.C., Jan. 11, 1945, and lived the majority of his earlier years in Sherwood, Md. Jerry graduated from St. Michael’s High School in 1963, joined the U.S. Navy, and later graduated from the University of Maryland in 1976. While serving in the Merchant Marine after college, Jerry met his wife Sue, and they married in Baltimore, Md., in 1978. The couple moved to Finksburg, Md., in 1980 to raise their two children. Jerry spent many weekends volunteering with a Project Liberty ship, the S.S. John Brown. Jerry was a den leader for Cub Scout Troop 395 and volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 381, both in Carroll County, Md. Jerry also enjoyed volunteering with the Westminster High School Marching Band. Jerry and Sue retired to Rehoboth Beach in 2008 to enjoy a life by the beach, and became heavily involved in a local Parkinson's support group.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sue Gnagy Fegan; daughter Lois Fegan of Richmond, Va.; son John Fegan, daughter-in-law Jesci Strange, and granddaughter Juniper Fegan of Fruitland, Md. He is also survived by his loving mother, Helen Fegan Bower of St. Michaels, Md.; brothers Robert Fegan (Marilyn) of Cazenovia, N.Y., Paul Fegan (Audrey) of Salisbury, Md., Stephen Fegan (Carol) of St. Michaels; and sisters Judy Hause (Harry) of Sherwood, Md., and Ann Fegan (Randolph Murphy) of Tilghman, Md. Other surviving relatives include sisters-in-law Pam Gnagy of Syracuse, N.Y., and Beth Gnagy of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; brother-in-law Randy Compton of Rochester, N.Y.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Jerry is predeceased by his father, Robert Fegan, mother Doris McGolrick, sister Patricia Fegan and brother-in-law Daniel Gnagy.
Funeral services will be held at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, 2 Olive Ave. and The Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach, Saturday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Project Liberty Ship “Keep Her Sailing” foundation or Delaware Hospice.
