A Return Day float from the mid-20th century

November 14, 2018

This picture postcard from the 1950s shows that Return Day traditions haven’t changed much through the decades - most importantly the burying of the hatchet after the elections. Return Day started in 1812 in Georgetown and 206 years later is still going strong. It dates back to a time when voters had to return to Georgetown - the county seat of Sussex - two days after the election to hear the results.
