Santa Cause 5K full of Christmas spirit
An unseasonably warm Sunday set the stage for a Christmas-themed 5K in Lewes.
What the the Santa Cause 5K Run/Walk lacked in winter weather was more than made up by the festive costumes worn by the 211 runners and dozens more walkers.
Delmar superstar runner Austen Cave won the race in 16:03, followed by Jossi Fritz-Mauer of Old Bethpage, N.Y., in 16:47 and Liam Bush of Camden-Wyoming in 18:38.
Lena Edelstein of Old Bethpage, N.Y., was fourth overall and the first woman to cross the finish line. She was followed in the women’s race by Kelsey and Alexis Oliphant in 22:43 and 22:46, respectively.
The event raised $10,000 in each of the first two years, but this year the total was doubled, as all proceeds benefit Children and Families First.
An after party was held at The Starboard, where youngsters could sit on Santa’s lap or play one of several holiday-themed games.
For full results, go to races2run.com. The Santa Cause 5K wrapped up the Races2Run beach schedule for 2018. The next race is the seventh annual Hair of the Dog 10K/5K on New Years Day in Bethany Beach.
Races at the beach will continue Saturday, Dec. 8, with the 11th annual Seashore Marathon and Half Marathon in Rehoboth Beach. It will begin at 7 a.m. from the Bandstand and head north to Lewes via the Gordons Pond Trail and, later in the race, the Junction and Breakwater Trail.
