Five AT&T cellphone towers installed in Rehoboth

In an effort to increase connectivity, AT&T has recently installed new cellphone towers in Rehoboth Beach.

In a Dec. 7 email, city spokeswoman Krys Johnson said the city signed a licensing agreement with AT&T in March. She said AT&T is installing five antennas – two on Rehoboth Avenue, one on Wilmington, one on top of the information center at the Delaware Avenue end of the Boardwalk and one on the Boardwalk at Baltimore Avenue.

The city and the communication company have a 10-year agreement, which automatically renews for four successive five-year terms. The contract can be terminated if either party gives 180-day written notice. AT&T has agreed to remove the structures at the completion of the agreement. AT&T will pay the city $2,000 a year for each installation, which is subject to an increase of 5 percent per term.

For now, these five AT&T antennas are the only ones the city has agreed to install, but there could be more in the future. Johnson said the city is reviewing the installation process for other cell phone carriers.
