Sussex County Council honors four state champs
Downstate teams dominate fall sports action in both DIAA divisions

Sussex County Council presented proclamations to four high school state championship teams during its Dec. 11 meeting. For the first time, Sussex County teams won Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I and Division II field hockey and football state titles. Councilmen Sam Wilson, I.G. Burton, and Rob Arlett, along with Council President Mike Vincent, Council Vice President George Cole and County Administrator Todd Lawson, made the presentations.

The 18-0 Delmar High School field hockey team won the Division II title, beating Caravel 5-0 in the finals. It’s the third straight state championship for the team.
In Division I, the Sussex Central High School football team (12-1) won its first state championship with a 33-7 victory over Salesianum.
The Woodbridge High School football team (11-2) won its second Division II state title in the past three years, defeating Friends 33-9.
