Cape’s state championship girls basketball team in 1973

February 27, 2019

Cape Gazette Sports Editor Emeritus Dave Frederick published this photo on March 11, 2011 when the Cape girls were headed to the school’s first appearance in a state championship basketball game since 1973. This photograph shows the only girls’ basketball team in Cape’s history to actually win the state title. This team beat Mt. Pleasant High School that year 33-31. It’s been eight years since this photograph last appeared. Since we’re in the midst of basketball season across the land, we thought it would be good to publish this again and give that team more of the notoriety it deserves.

Members of that 1973 championship team are shown here sitting in the bleachers of Cape Henlopen High School number one on Savannah Road in downtown Lewes.Top row left to right: managers Sandy Hudson, Karen Schrock, Patti Maloney, Leslie Eschenbach and Coach Bob Cassady. Second row, left to right: Amy Reed and her sister Ann Reed, Diane Berens, Cindy Keller, Mary Jane Hitchens and Debbie Hopkins. Front row left to right: Virginia Savage, Delores Walker, Nancy Steen, Adele Adams, Christine Burton and Georgia Edwards.
