Picking strawberries on a Bridgeville farm

Memorial Day Weekend means honoring those dead who have served in our armed forces, the beginning of the resort area’s summer season, and the strawberry harvest in Sussex County. This photograph from the 1940s shows students from Thomas F. Bayard Junior High School in Wilmington helping pick strawberries on a Bridgeville farm. They were among many students sent to farms at this time to help with the strawberry harvest due to the lack of other workers who were off helping with the war effort.
