The early days of Cape Henlopen State Park

This photograph from the 1960s shows the earliest entrance to Cape Henlopen State Park, just after the area started transitioning from the United States Army’s Fort Miles to one of the finest state parks along the eastern seaboard of the U.S.

Traffic to the park was light in those days, before word started getting out. Now, after decades of evolution and improvement, the park is so popular that on holiday weekends like the recent Memorial Day weekend, there are times at the peak of the day when the park has to close to further traffic. After that point, regulators only let more cars in after a certain number of cars leave.
