Summertime is beach time: in Lewes now and then

August 6, 2019

This picture postcard from the George and Irene Caley Collection was postmarked 1909 and was sent from Lewes to an address in Harbeson. It shows the public beach in Lewes, fronting on Delaware Bay, and the Transportation Pier in the background. The Transportation Pier provided the connection between steamboats that plied Delaware Bay and River and the Queen Anne Railroad that crossed the Delmarva Peninsula between Love Point at the northern end of Kent Island, on the Chesapeake, and its terminus on the pier in Lewes.
