The Cape field hockey team had all it could handle from a defense-minded Milford team Nov. 3. The Lady Vikings didn't hit the back of the cage until the 5:53 mark in a 2-0 victory.
"Milford came out strong defensively for us," said left midfielder Tiarra Duffy. "Everyone is raising their game when they play us."
Cape's first score came from the stick of Taylor Trimmer off a helper by Jacki Coveleski. Erin Ricker slammed one in with an assist by Kat Judge for the insurance goal at 2:18.
"Hey, it's tourney time," smiled right defender Gina Voss. "We have to push it to the limit, and the coaches have us whipped into shape."
Cape took 21 shots and also had 13 penalty corners while Milford had none during the contest.
"When we are on our game, we're on," said Bucs goalie Rebekah Yanacek, speaking of the Milford defensive play that held the Vikings' powerful offense scoreless for most of the game. Yanacek was credited with 12 saves in the contest.
"We need to work on some things for the tournament," said Cape coach Nicole Hughes. "We didn't communicate well today, and that's not like us, but we had a lot of bright spots in our game."
The 14-0 Vikings open DIAA state tournament play at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8, at home against Concord.
