Dr. Thomas Kelly to focus on chronic diseases

Shore Community Medical to open in December
November 8, 2011

Dr. Thomas Kelly will open a new primary care office on Route 24 this December.

Shore Community Medical will focus on adult patients with chronic diseases.

Kelly has worked with adults with developmental disabilities in the past, and has a special interest in chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease. Kelly said he plans to use a patient-centered approach to help people work through their ailments.

“I will be working for adult patients who want a physician who can manage chronic illnesses and who will help promote their health and wellness,” Kelly said.

He chose the Cape Region for a number of reasons, including proximity to his home in Rehoboth. Kelly and partner Ahmed Elmanan moved to the area four years ago and have come to love the community. Elmanan is also Kelly’s office manager at Shore Community Medical.

“There is a need for primary care physicians in the area,” said Kelly. “After working for a decade in different areas of medicine, I really wanted to take my experience to a private practice. I look forward to serving the community here.”

Kelly graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1996 and finished his residency in 2000. Since then he has served as medical director at Delaware Health and Social Services' Stockley Center outside Georgetown and more recently as medical director and internist at Deer’s Head Hospital in Salisbury. Kelly plans to continue part-time as a staff physician at Deer’s Head while his new private practice gets under way.

“I have met a lot of community members and most seem excited to have another primary care physician,” Kelly said. “I hope to work in partnership with my patients to understand their goals and provide the best therapy options for them.”

Specializing in internal medicine, Kelly said he hopes to help his patients live a more healthful life. He has been board certified since 2000. In 2010, he founded Healthy Delawareans with Disabilities while he was working for the state of Delaware.

Kelly is in the process of getting approvals to accept Medicare and most major insurance carriers at his new Rehoboth practice, located at the Beebe Medical Campus on Route 24 in the Medical Arts Building, Suite 306. He is now credentialed to care for patients through Beebe Medical Center. Prior to receiving his medical degree, Kelly worked as a registered nurse from 1986-1992. He also served as a medical technician for six years with the Air Force Reserve.
