Trump is responsible for fate of Kurds

October 29, 2019

While I do not generally think of the Cape Gazette as a place for debate about the national political scene, it is hard to ignore the shortsighted outlook offered by Royce Haynes (Oct 22-24) in response to Rebecca’s Scarborough’s criticism of Trump’s abandonment of our Kurdish allies in Syria.  Far from being dealt a “lousy hand” by Obama - who probably faced the lousiest hand in history dealt by a presidential predecessor.

Trump’s deliberate and consistent undermining of our allies has destroyed America’s credibility across the globe and severely weakened our leadership position as both Russia and China angle for greater dominance.

Rather than pressuring Erdogan to reach a political settlement with the Kurds, Trump, as usual, caved in to a strongman who reflects his own image.  And as is so often the case with Trump supporters, Mr. Haynes’ interpretation of “the facts” reflects little understanding of the world and of history.

ISIS clearly means to do Americans harm, and imagining that it was beneficial to desert the allies who - with great sacrifice – have helped to keep them in check is downright delusional.
