Liquor stores not an essential service

March 27, 2020

The following letter was sent to Gov. John Carney, Rep. Steve Smyk, Sen. Ernie Lopez  and Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf, with a copy sent to the Cape Gazette for publication.

Clearly, liquor stores are not essential services. By leaving them open when Pennsylvania has closed theirs for over a week, you are inviting people to cross into the state, possibly spreading the the virus from out-of-state. Also, as you observed how people on the beach did not follow the rules of social distancing, take a look at the way people line up a liquor stores.

You wisely closed the bars before St. Patrick’s Day because you said since surrounding states had done so, Delaware would become a magnet for people looking to go to bars.

The same problem applies to liquor stores.  I implore you - close the liquor stores. They are not an essential service.
