Peninsula Gallery challenges artists to create new work

Exhibit schedule adjusted
April 22, 2020

During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Peninsula Gallery has challenged its resident artists to create at least one new piece in order to fill the gallery with fresh work for guests who will be eager to visit once reopening can occur.

In submitting her first image for this project, titled “Hope,” Syd McGinley said, “Most days the studio has been a refuge for me, but at times I visit the easel with no hope of continuing work. Other days I can’t wait to put marks on paper.”

McGinley’s experience mirrors the communal reality of humans. At times, this dilemma may seem paralyzing, but when people share their struggles and triumphs, it becomes easier to see a bit of hope.

The Peninsula Gallery has had to reschedule and even cancel some exhibitions planned for this year. The show by Dane Tilghman, which was due to come down at the end of March, has been held over until at least the end of April. Local contemporary artist Nina Mickelsen’s show Evolution, which was set to open at the end of March and continue through April, has been changed to run from Saturday, June 27, to Sunday, July 19. All the work is currently viewable on the gallery website.

Symbiosis: Art and Nature, an exhibit by mixed-media collage artist Kate Norris, due to open Saturday, May 30, is currently on schedule, pending the status of shutdowns at that time.
