AVID students at Beacon Middle School lifted the spirits of community members in May during a three-week project called Rooted in Love.
While doing schoolwork at home, students picked community service projects that suited their interests and capabilities. They created plans to carry out and complete their projects within three weeks.
AVID teacher Nichole Hughes said, “This project started with students watching a brief video about how we need to pull together during this time. It ended with students gaining an inner sense of gratitude.”
Hughes and her daughter Adelia, a kindergartener at Love Creek, initiated the project by creating kindness notes and painting kindness rocks to deliver to neighbors’ mailboxes.
Volunteer projects varied from helping a neighbor with lawn care or planting a garden, to collecting food or clothing to donate. Some students gave their time in their neighborhoods cleaning up trash, creating pop-up cards and painting rocks to spread smiles.
Ariana Gibbs, an eighth-grade AVID student, created and delivered goodie bags for her grandfather’s neighborhood. AVID sixth-grader Cooper Nathan conducted his own collection for the food pantry at Epworth church. The Beacon AVID students showed that even the simplest acts can spread immeasurable kindness throughout their communities.
