Shirley M. Pettit, retired nurse

June 12, 2020

Shirley M. Pettit, 84, went to be with her Lord in heaven, her eternal home Monday, June 8, 2020.

She was born the daughter of Clifford Sr. and Dorothy Messick in 1935 in Millsboro, where she resided most of her life.  She was sister to Sonny Messick, Edward Messick, Bonnie Messick, Richard Messick, Patricia Messick and Theodore Messick.

Shirley married Royston Pettit in December 1956 and spent two years in Germany while Royston served in the Army and she worked in a local hospital.  Shirley was in the nursing field for 31 years, mostly spent as a Delaware State Public Health Nurse.  She graduated from Beebe School of Nursing in Lewes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Royston Pettit; a brother, Sonny Messick; and a sister, Bonnie Messick.  She is survived by her four siblings, Edward Messick, Richard Messick, Patricia Messick and Theodore Messick; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Shirley had the key to the church and the key to our hearts.  Our sister, aunt, friend and angel will be greatly missed every day.  Her favorite scripture verse was Jude 2, “Mercy, Peace and Love be yours in abundance.”

Shirley loved spending time with her family, visiting friends and always doing for others.  She loved her creatures from God. Birdwatching and eating dark chocolate were part of her favorite daily routines.

A public visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro.  A private funeral service will follow. The graveside portion of the service will also be open to the public at Conley’s Chapel Cemetery, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, a little after 3 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, facial coverings and social distancing are required.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Shirley’s name to Conley’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyns Way, Lewes, DE 19958.
