Cape High assistant principal returns to his roots

Kyle Bentley named principal at H.O. Brittingham Elementary

Cape High Assistant Principal Kyle Bentley will return to elementary education as the new principal at H.O. Brittingham.

“My first job was teaching elementary school in Philly, so it’s nice to return to my roots,” he said. “HOB is a perfect fit. It’s always been a school I’m very interested in because of the Hispanic population, the Spanish immersion program and the community.”

Bentley succeeds former HOB Principal Ned Gladfelter, who is now Cape’s human resources supervisor.

“I’ll spend the first couple of weeks listening and learning about the school, meeting with community members, and developing plans to continue the work in progress and find ways to make it even better,” Bentley said.

Bentley said the opportunity to take the next step in his career and work with HOB Assistant Principal Yvette Davenport guided his decision to move.

“It was hard to leave the high school but at the same time I truly feel we are a Cape family and I’m just moving to a new home,” he said.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in Spanish at Penn State University, Bentley taught bilingual students at Julia de Burgos Elementary in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood while working toward his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction at Penn State.

Bentley joined Cape in 2017, after working as associate principal at Seaford High and assistant principal at Chipman Middle. He was named 2020 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Delaware Association of School Administrators. Bentley lives in Lewes with his wife, Ali.

“I look forward to watching students grow from kindergarten through 12th grade,” he said. “That will be really exciting as I continue to work to fulfill the Cape promise of excellence, equity and responsiveness for every student, every classroom, every day.”
