Cape volleyball falls to Dover

Vikings look hopefully toward postseason
November 25, 2020

The Cape volleyball team fell 20-25, 17-25, 25-14 and 18-25 to Dover in a lackluster performance Nov. 23 at Dover High. It was the first time Dover bested the Vikings in recent history.

The Senators played a confident and physical game, giving the Vikings all they could handle during the Senators’ Senior Night.

“I think Dover’s physicality and defensive game plan overwhelmed us,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Our serve-reception wasn’t consistent; we seemed to doubt ourselves in our style of play, and it showed. A loss is never wanted, but I think this was needed to provide the mental shock for us to wake up before the state tournament begins. A reminder we’re trending in the right direction, but we’re not fully where we need to be, and that we need to focus on improving ourselves each day.”

Sophomore setter Natalie Derrickson led the Vikings with 28 assists and five digs. Senior Emily Lamb bumped 19 digs and tallied two aces. Rileigh Wilson powered 12 kills and roofed a block. Senior Katie Knarr knocked down eight kills, had four digs, assisted on two points and served an ace.

Angelica Kusen garnered six kills and four blocks, while Bre Kusen added five kills. Sophomore Kali Lawson and senior Jocelyn Leach scored eight and six digs, respectively. Leach also served two aces.

Cape moves to 9-2, while the Senators are also 9-2.

The Vikings junior varsity fell to the JV Senators 2-0, moving their record to 5-4.
