Each year, community members support the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s Southern Lights of Life gala through donations, volunteering, sponsorships and attendance in a community effort to come together and take action to defeat breast cancer.
This year, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition's Ninth Annual Southern Lights of Life: An Evening of Living and Giving gala will be held from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. Southern Lights of Life is southern Delaware’s premier breast cancer fundraising event with all funds benefiting DBCC’s programs and services in Kent and Sussex counties.
Southern Lights of Life features wine, dinner, live and silent auctions, live entertainment and an upbeat fashion show featuring models who are local breast cancer survivors. Individual ticket reservations are $150 each with various levels of sponsorship beginning at $500. Live and silent auction items are donated by local businesses of various industries including travel, sports, entertainment, dining, beauty and more.
This year, live entertainment will be provided by Danny and the Juniors featuring Joe Terry, a doo-wop quartet from Philadelphia that formed in 1955 and now tours with Joe Terranova and brothers Frank and Bobby Maffei. They are most widely recognized for their hit single “At the Hop,” released in 1957. Popular Salisbury-based dance band On the Edge will also be performing.
The 2012 Southern Lights of Life co-chairs are Gerri Coble of Bridgeville and Lorna Petchey of Milford. This year’s honorary chair is Patti Key of Laurel, DBCC board vice president, and CEO of Harrington Raceway and Casino.
“The Southern Lights of Life gala is a celebration of life,” said Patti Rossi and Rosemary Engle, co-chairs of the event’s Fashion Committee. “It showcases the style and spirit exemplified by breast cancer survivors. The event is also an opportunity to educate the community about breast cancer and the many services provided by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.”
The generous support of the community enabled DBCC to raise $185,000 at the 2011 Southern Lights of Life event with 675 attendees. The funds were used to expand programs in Kent and Sussex counties which increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms and provide support and resources to women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
