Phillip Harold Sammons, Nanticoke powwow dancer

January 21, 2021

Phillip Harold Sammons departed this life Dec. 27, 2020. He was born to Charles and Glendora Sammons of Dover Dec. 7, 1948.

Phillip was a member of the Nanticoke Indian Association and danced in the pow-wow for over 27 years; his favorite dance was dancing beside his son Mark in their signature "The Feather Dance." He supported the association after he stopped dancing by drumming in the pow-wow, teaching the youth the Native American songs of the tribe, and preparing for start of pow-wow. Phillip enjoyed bead working and making his regalia.
Phillip was a self-employed master electrician for over 40 years, then retired and started working with the Indian River School District as a custodian for over 10 years. After retiring from the school district, Phillip decided to move to Florida to
enjoy the remaining years of his life.
Phillip's first love was Ingrid Dawn Norwood-Sammons of Millsboro, who passed away in 1993.  He is survived by their two children together, Mark Sammons (Teresa) and Tara Sammons-Doughty (Sterling); two grandchildren, Christopher Doughty and Kate lynn Klingensmith. He enjoyed having them over to swim in the pool. Phillip married Candice Sammons later in life. In addition, he is survived by five brothers: Charles "Shorty," Edward "Eddie" (Joyce), John "Jackie" (Cindy), Glendon "Buddy" (Nancy) and Robert "Bobby;" and three sisters, Linda Horan (Thomas), Cherylene Miller (Bruce) and Marylyn "Marie" Durham, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
At this time due to COVID, there will be a private graveside service for Phillip's immediate family only. Please send any donations to the Nanticoke Indian Association.
