Caravel Academy, the defending Division II state champion, grappled past a tough Cape squad Jan. 25 at the Big House, winning 40-29.
The loss was Cape’s first of the season, dropping the Vikings to 4-1. The Buccaneers remain undefeated.
“It was a good match to get us ready for a run through the Henlopen North where we will face Caesar Rodney, Smyrna and Sussex Central over a period of six days,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “I thought there were a couple matches where we could have flipped the script, but overall we wrestled well. Caravel is just tough on top; they not only have great talent up and down the lineup, but are well coached.”
The match opened and closed with a short stack of Cape pancakes. Lucas Ruppert pinned Alex Hall at 285, then 13 bouts later at 220 Jackson Handlin won by fall over Kyshwn Drumgo.
Caravel would win three matches by pin – at 106 with Eddie Radecki over Arthur Bennett, at 120 with Luke Poore over John Wright and at 195 with Danny Stradley over Alex Taylor.
Alex Poore earned a tech fall Jayden Johnson at 152, and the Bucs got major decisions by Dylan Knight 14-0 over Grant Barczak at 126 and Michael King 14-4 over Bryan Garcia at 132.
Cape’s Luke Bender won by 15-0 tech fall over John Antonio at 145, C.J. Fritchman received a forfeit at 160 and Dalton Deevey won by fall over Alex Diluzio at 182.
Caravel won the only three closely contested matches – Marcello Ioannoni over Rony Perez 6-0 at 112, Ethan Gray over Mikey Frederick 10-5 at 138 and Mathew Duarte over Carson Kammerer 7-4 at 170.
Cape will wrestle at Sussex Tech at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, then host Delaware Military Academy at 5:30p.m., Monday, Feb. 1.
Caravel will host Sussex Central Feb. 1.
