Love Creek Elementary students Kendall DeShields and Mikiah Jackson, and Mariner Middle students Adrianna Powell and Ada Spells were recognized March 17 with the African American/Black Achievement Award from the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice.
Teachers say Kendall, a third-grader, always works hard academically and sets a great example through her behavior for her classmates as well as other students in the building. Kendall was the first student chosen by her classmates for the Leader in Me Leadership Lap for always doing the right thing even when no one is watching. She is kind and respectful toward others and a pleasure to have in class.
Fifth-grader Mikiah has grown by leaps and bounds in his efforts to be a proactive leader and model peer, teachers say, and demonstrates perseverance and willingness to learn from his mistakes to achieve his goals. With his sights set on attending college, Mikiah holds himself accountable and owns up to his mistakes, and is willing to talk through and grow from his weaknesses.
Mariner Middle teachers say Adrianna does an exceptional job day in and day out, and she can always be counted on to try her best and look for help when she wants to go above and beyond.
Ada demonstrates leadership by consistently participating in her remote classes, teachers say, and she is willing to take academic risks for the benefit of her education while being kind to everyone.
Each student received a $15 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth; SDARJ contributes $10 to each gift card, and Browseabout contributes $5.
