State puts out call for people 65 and older to get first shot
More than 2,500 appointments are available for a weekend vaccination event in Dover for seniors who have not yet received their first shot.
The Division of Public Health said it has sent multiple invitations to people who remain on the state’s waiting list for those 65 and older, but spots remain for about 2,600 people at a COVID-19 vaccination to be held Friday, March 19, Saturday, March 20, and Sunday, March 21, at Dover International Speedway.
“The Dover Speedway vaccination event this weekend may be one of the last state-coordinated events with appointments reserved solely for seniors,” officials said in a press release.
During the event, DPH will administer Moderna vaccine on Friday and Sunday, and Pfizer vaccine on Saturday. This is a drive-through event that usually takes 15 or 20 minutes from arriving to being vaccinated, followed by a short observation period before departure.
Any individuals 65 and older who live, work or receive their healthcare in Delaware are invited to sign up at vaccinerequest.delaware.gov/s/schedule to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The scheduling website will only accept appointments for individuals 65 and up, and photo ID is required at the vaccination event in order to prove age. Anyone who is not 65 or older should not attempt to make an appointment.
The weekend event will also vaccinate frontline and other essential employees who are being signed up via outreach directly to employers, and the event will provide second doses to teachers and childcare workers who received a first dose at Dover Speedway in February. These employment-based appointments are being made through a separate link.
The state plans to open the state’s waiting list and the state’s vaccination events next week to those age 50 and older. On March 17, pharmacies in Delaware began vaccinating Delawareans 50 and older. Healthcare providers, including hospitals, may vaccinate patients 16 and older who have high- and moderate-risk medical conditions.
