Everyone has had unique challenges this last 12-plus months, especially teachers. To show appreciation, members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 of Lewes assembled small but heartfelt gifts of hand sanitizers, with labels that say, “Not All Heroes Wear Uniforms,” a reference to the military community for which this unit also provides support. The packages were distributed May 3, the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7, to grateful teachers at Love Creek and Shields elementary schools, Beacon and Mariner middle schools, and Cape Henlopen High School.
Teachers should be appreciated every year, as they change the lives of children every day. In a year when studies had to be made creative and flexible, teachers stood up to the task of making instruction virtual, in person, and a mixture of both. These efforts helped provide a much-needed sense of normalcy and connection for local students.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 will continue to show gratitude and support for local educators. In the fall, volunteers will collect and distribute school supplies for these schools and their students to begin a new year of learning.
