Legates takes reins of Milton Historical Society

Milford native named executive director

Jennifer Legates has been named executive director of Milton Historical Society by the society's board of trustees.

A native of Milford, Legates brings more than 18 years of experience in museum management and as an interpreter of living history to her post in Milton. Most recently, Legates served as deputy director at historic St. Mary’s City in St. Mary’s City, Md.

Prior to that, she worked as director of education and director of curriculum and educational initiatives at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, a
Smithsonian-affiliated museum in Kennesaw, Ga., for six years. Legates also worked for the Delaware State Museums in Dover for six years.

She holds a master of liberal studies degree with a museum emphasis from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., and a bachelor of arts in history from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va. She is pursuing a graduate certificate in nonprofit management from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

In announcing her appointment in a press release, historical society officials said they are pleased to have Legates on board and look forward to enhancing the Lydia B. Cannon Museum as the historical heart of Milton.
