David Robert Stephens Kelso, gifted teacher

August 27, 2021

David Robert Stephens Kelso, 61, of New York City, N.Y., was born Sept. 24,1959, in Salisbury, Md., son of Horace C. and Irene Jean Stephens. He died April 7, 2021, after a brief illness.
He is survived by brother Craig R. Stephens Sr.; sister Melanie S. Wingate and husband Lou; nephews CJ Stephens, Robbie Stephens (wife Maddie), Josh Wingate (wife Jenn), Andy Sheppard (wife Sarah) and niece, Bailey Wingate; several great-nieces and -nephews; and his four-footed "kids,” Pauly, Esther, Blitz and Eartha Kitt. David was also blessed to have an incredible group of friend, and for them the family is eternally grateful.
David grew up in Lewes and graduated from Cape Henlopen High School in 1977. He went on to receive two bachelor's degrees, music therapy and music education from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Winchester, Va. This was where he
discovered his love of vocal performance which took him to Tallahassee, Fla., to earn a master's degree in music from Florida State University. After several years of performing leading roles in many regional theaters, David earned the starring role of Old Deuteronomy in the European tour of "Cats."

Moving to NYC in 1992, David became a devoted Yankees fan, thriving on the city life, making it his home. Because of the love of his craft David became an exceptional voice teacher and, while he had no children of his own, he actually had too many to count.
Being a voice teacher at Cap21 and AMDA as well as his private studio was David's true calling. His teacher's heart and off centered sense of humor have led many of his students to successful careers on Broadway, national tours, television and
films. David's legacy will live on in those that were lucky to be one of his "singlings."
A Celebration of David's Life will be held in NYC on his birthday, Friday, Sept. 24. A livestream link will be available. For information please email WingateMelanieS@gmail.com.
