A soldier’s life isn’t all battle and glamour

This photograph from around 1944 shows U.S. Army soldiers, stationed at Fort Miles in Lewes, helping with the Sussex County string bean harvest. Help was scarce during the war, so any assistance offered Sussex County farmers was sincerely appreciated. 

U.S. soldiers weren’t the only soldiers who helped on Sussex County farms. German prisoners of war, quartered in barracks in Lewes where the Huling Cove senior housing is now located, were also employed in a variety of tasks around local farms as well as in other local enterprises including the menhaden processing facilities where the Cape Shores community is now located.
