The Cape girls’ basketball team moved to 1-1 on the season with a 60-38 Northern Division victory over a stubborn Senators squad Dec. 7 in Dover.
Mehkia Applewhite led all scorers with 17 points, including three from behind the three-point arc. She also had five rebounds and four steals. Morgan Mahoney tallied 16 points, including two threes, while snagging nine rebounds. She blocked five Dover shot attempts and made four steals while dishing off four assists. Julia Saleur scored seven points, with one three, and made two assists. Kelly Bragg, Diana Nauman and Hayden Hudson each scored four points. Faith Re, Grace Totten and Ja'Onna Lee each scored a basket.
The Lady Vikings got off to a slow start and couldn't find their range until midway through the first quarter, which they finished ahead 17-10. They continued with fast-paced play in the second, hitting 17 more points.
"We were playing really fast," said Mahoney. "We were rushing and forcing passes that we didn't need to force. We committed a lot of turnovers in the first two quarters. When we slowed it down and started playing at our pace and knocking down shots, that’s when we got it together."
The Vikings scored 17 more in the third quarter and took a 51-25 lead into the fourth. Substituting freely in the fourth, the Vikings scored nine from the bench to end the game 60-38.
"We were hesitant and were throwing the ball all over the place," said Cape head coach Pat Woods. "We were passive. If we are going to make mistakes, I'd rather make aggressive mistakes. We had five turnovers in the first couple of minutes, and we gave up five shots. When we work for the shot, I want us to take it."
Dover was paced by Myaja Bynum with 16 points.
The Vikings will play Calvary Christian Academy from Florida at the She Got Game Classic at Alexandria City High School (Va.) Saturday, Dec. 11.
