Weis Markets donates $1.3M to local food banks

Weis Markets announced customer donations totaling over $1.3 million to local food banks as part of the company’s 14th Annual Fight Hunger campaign. The two-week program, beginning in November, gave Weis customers across its seven-state market area the option of rounding up their orders or purchasing $1, $3, $5 or $10 vouchers to help support families in need in their communities. “Every year, we look forward to partnering with our generous customers to give back to the communities we serve,” said Ron Bonacci, Weis Markets vice president of advertising and marketing. “This total represents combined customer and company donations. It is the perfect way to finish 2021 and celebrate the season of giving.” Since 2008, the Fight Hunger campaign has raised over $5 million for regional and local food banks.

Christmas caroling to support Christianity set Dec. 18

A Christmas caroling event to support the crèche and Christianity will be held from 12 to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand crèche. William Cocco, pastor at St. Edmond Church in Rehoboth Beach will lead attendees in prayer.

Unitarian Universalists set winter solstice services Dec. 19

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a winter solstice service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, online and in person, with reservations required. An evening solstice service is set for 6 p.m., Dec. 19, online and in person, with reservations required. Calling in the light on the longest night, attendees will come together to move through the deep night of winter with drumming and a fire ceremony to release what hinders and support one another in holding the light. Attendees may bring drums if they have them, thoughts of what they want to release, and a willing spirit of community. To register or learn more, go to uussd.org.

Youth football, cheerleading signups Dec. 19

Signups for Cape Vikings Elite football and cheerleading will be held from 12 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, and 12 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 16, at Meineke Car Care, 16753 Coastal Highway, Lewes. Boys and girls 5 to 14 years old are eligible to participate. The Vikings compete in the Delmarva American Youth Football league from February to May.
