The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored students Ian Mifflin and Emmanuel Brice for their demonstration of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.
Mariner Middle student Ian Mifflin has made tremendous progress both behaviorally and academically, teachers said. Initially, Ian was resistant to trying anything new or challenging, but quickly learned that when he followed directions and made an effort, he was rewarded with good grades and positive reinforcement. Ian began to feel pride in his work and others looked to him as a leader.
Cape High junior Emmanuel Brice moved to the area last winter from Florida. Emmanuel joined a new classroom last spring, which allowed him to start an exploratory vocational program with the Sussex Consortium. Emmanuel continues excelling within a life skills/vocational program. Emmanuel maintains a positive attitude, respectful manner, and is well liked by his peers. He works hard at all that he does, and is learning increased independence as he moves towards his senior year.
Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and the youth version of a book about Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court.
SDARJ’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students in the Cape district who represent ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools. A nonpartisan organization, SDARJ educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
