Cape girls’ basketball defeats Central 50-7

The Cape girls’ basketball team moved to 12-3 on the season with a dominating 50-7 victory over host Sussex Central Feb. 8. Central is now 3-11.

Cape senior Morgan Mahoney scored 20 points in the game, adding three rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

“We came out kind of sloppy,” said Mahoney. “We were just working on executing plays and being disciplined in half-court defense.”

Senior Mehkia Applewhite scored four points, ripped six rebounds and made three steals, while senior Kelly Bragg tallied four points, eight rebounds and three steals. Ja’Onna Lee started at point guard and scored four points with four steals. Lauryn Head and Ella Rishko combined to score two points, five rebounds and four steals.

Freshman Faith Re hit for seven points, including one from behind the three-point line. Re, a swing player between JV and varsity, has made 27 three-pointers this season.

Diana Nauman, Grace Totten, Hayden Hudson and Mya Maull came off the bench to garner nine points and nine rebounds.

McKenna Boyle, Blair Darmstadter, Mykiera Smith-Boyer and Jadyn Polk combined for the Knights’ points.

The Vikings travel to Sanford Friday, Feb. 11, to face the No. 1-ranked Warriors.
