Contract awarded for Route 1/Route 16 overpass
The Delaware Department of Transportation has awarded the contract for construction of a grade-separated interchange at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 16 near Milton.
With a bid of $23.19 million, A-Del Construction Company Inc. was the lowest bidder of the six companies that participated. The bid is more than $1 million over the engineer’s estimate.
The project comprises construction of a grade-separation with a bridge and entrance/exit ramps. The project includes elevating Route 1 over Route 16 with dual bridges to provide free-flowing movements in both northbound and southbound directions. It also includes realignment of the intersection at Route 1 and Deep Branch Road, construction of stormwater management facilities and roadside swales, installation of lighting and other incidental construction in accordance with the location.
Utility relocation is already underway, with construction expected to begin this summer.
The Route 16 overpass is the first of three major projects along Route 1 corridor between Milton and Lewes. A grade-separated intersection is planned for Minos Conaway Road and Nassau Bridge, set to begin in 2023, and another grade-separated intersection at Cave Neck Road is slated for a 2025 start.
