SpringHill Suites by Marriott breaks ground in Frederica

Construction underway for 21-acre retail, dining and hospitality project near DE Turf
March 25, 2022

Asbury Hospitality LLC principal Michael Meoli, DE Turf Board of Directors Chair Bill Strickland and Frederica Mayor William “Chick” Glanden were joined by members of DE Turf’s youth soccer league March 19 to break ground with a ceremonial kick-off to launch soccer balls into the budding foundation of the new SpringHill Suites by Marriott.

The hotel becomes the cornerstone of Frederica’s newest development, Asbury Square. Located across Route 1 from Kent County regional sports complex DE Turf, Asbury Square is positioned to provide tourists, teams and locals to a variety of dining, retail and convenience options.

The 86-room hotel will serve as a premier lodging option for those visiting Frederica. Its proximity to DE Turf gives visitors an opportunity to stay, shop and dine closer to their tournaments and games than ever before.

“The vision, foresight and determination that brought the DE Turf sports complex to life has now officially spawned the first of many support services that were designed within the master plan to boost the viability of the Turf and ultimately the economic growth and stability of Kent County,” said Meoli. “I’m excited, confident and proud to be principal owner of this hotel, which I know will be the catalyst for smart and responsible development that will occur along this part of the Route 1 corridor over the next decade.”

DE Turf was developed to drive tourism and economic development in Kent County. The complex features 12 fields and serves as regular host of regional and national tournaments.

“The vision for the DE Turf was to become an economic driver for Delaware businesses and to serve as a catalyst for business growth in central Delaware, said Strickland. “It is with that vision in mind that I am so pleased to see the SpringHill Suites coming to Frederica.”

“The new SpringHill Suites will offer guests expanded rooms and guest amenities and is the ideal lodging property to service the guests of DE Turf, Bayhealth hospital and the many tourists who travel every day along the Route 1 corridor,” said Meoli.

The hotel property is expected to be completed by spring 2023.
