Lewes living history events to start April 2

March 26, 2022

The Lewes Historical Society will kick off the 2022 season of Lewistown Living History events with the day-long historical experience, Hearty in the Cause: Lewes 1776, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 2.

Events will take place he historic campus located at 110 Shipcarpenter St. and the Lewes Maritime Museum at the Cannonball House, 118 Front St., both in downtown Lewes.

On March 25, 1776, HMS Roebuck arrived on the Delaware Bay, ushering in a period of blockade and maritime harassment. Situated prominently at the mouth of the Delaware River and Bay, Lewes played a critical role in relaying the actions of enemy vessels directly to the Committee of Safety in Philadelphia.

Hearty in the Cause is an immersive program set in the spring of 1776 and transports visitors to the tumultuous period in Lewes’ early days of the American Revolution. The historical experiences of those both in town and at sea will be recreated by historical interpreters at both the Lewes Historical Society Campus and the Lewes Maritime Museum at the Cannonball House. The society’s historic campus comes to life with demonstrations including an 18th century spring pole lathe, historic cricket matches and period spirits at the colonial Sussex Tavern, and by friends from Brittingham Farms.

Visitors can kick off the historic weekend with authentic colonial-era spirits or a cold ale at Sussex Tavern in the Rabbits Ferry House from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 1, on the LHS campus.
