The Del Tech softball squad moved to 17-1 April 15, with a doubleheader sweep of Lackawanna College.
Macey Myers (Milford) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Tech over the Falcons in the first game, a 9-2 win. Carlin Quinn (Cape Henlopen) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Couri Smith (Laurel) delivered 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kandice Schlabach (Delmarva Christian) slammed two doubles and an RBI. Logan Walls (Delmar) and Kylie Kruger (Sussex Tech) each drove in a run. Walls and Smith each had a stolen base.
Lauren Smith (Snow Hill) picked up the win in the circle, striking out six and allowing just one earned run. She moved to 7-1 on the season.
Tech pitcher Carly Collins (Sussex Central) went the distance in the second game, an 8-2 win, scattering seven hits while giving up two runs and striking out five. She moves to 7-0 in the circle.
Tech outhit the Falcons 14-7. Myers went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Quinn had a two-hit game with an RBI, while Schlabach had a hit and an RBI. Walls had a stolen base.
“These games against Lackawanna were huge,” said Del Tech manager Guy Wilkins. “They are a very good team and well coached.”
The Tech squad is 4-0 in region play and is set to face Mercer Friday, April 22. If Tech wins one of those games, it will be the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.
“If we could get the one seed, we would host the playoffs at Delaware Tech,” Wilkins said.
The Tech team is third in the nation with a .412 batting average, sixth in on-base percentage at. 471 and 12th with a .596 slugging percentage.
“We have a lot of great student-athletes that are having fun playing the game they love,” Wilkins said.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
