The Sussex County Courthouse is one of Georgetown’s iconic historic structures. This photograph from 1924 shows the building hasn’t changed too much in the last 98 years. Of course, most everything around it has changed quite a bit. Construction for the current courthouse began in 1837 following the sale and relocation of the original courthouse to its current site on South Bedford Street. The Brick Hotel across the square was designated as the temporary seat of justice. Designed by well-known architect William Strickland, construction of the new courthouse was completed in 1839. A major renovation and expansion project occurred in 1969.
