Several special guests from the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company received a hearty welcome at the Dewey Beach commissioners meeting May 20.

Mayor Bill Stevens welcomed Fire Chief Chuck Snyder, Vice President Warren Jones and President Danny Mitchell to recognize firefighters for their work in fighting a February fire on Bayard Avenue and an April fire on Bayard and Swedes Street.

“I just wanted to thank you guys from the bottom of our hearts for everything that you guys do,” Stevens said.

In addition to those two fires, Town Manager Bill Zolper said, the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company responded to two other fires in town over the past year.

“The last one was really horrific,” Stevens said. “And, no lives lost.”

After the meeting, Zolper noted in particular the fire company’s response to the April fire in Dewey Beach.

“Their quick response and proactive action to keep the fire from spreading is a direct reflection of dedication and professionalism,” Zolper said. “I will be suggesting that the town increase its yearly donation to the fire company.”
