Culinary History of Southern Delaware program set June 23

June 20, 2022

The Rehoboth Beach Museum will host a program by Denise Clemons on the Culinary History of Southern Delaware at 4 p.m., Thursday, June 23, at the museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.

Registration is required at rehobothbeachmuseum.org, under the Events tab.

The presentation is based on Clemons’ research for her book, “A Culinary History of Southern Delaware: Scrapple, Beach Plums and Muskrat,” published in 2016.

Clemons is a culinary professional, freelance writer and weekly columnist for the Cape Gazette. Since 2005 she has been writing Cape Flavors, a recipe and cooking advice column for the home chefs of Sussex County and beyond.

In “A Culinary History of Southern Delaware,” Clemons provides recipes for regional favorites like beach plum jelly, and investigates the history of the ingredients and origins for each dish. She explores the evolution of Southern Delaware cuisine from the native Nanticoke people and their foraging traditions, to sentimental German immigrants re-creating dishes from their home country, to today’s local farmers markets and farm-to-table trends.
